the basics of

naturopathic medicine

  • The 6 Principles of Naturopathic Medicine:

    1. Primum non nocere – First, Do No Harm
Utilize the most effective, least invasive, and least toxic therapies to achieve wellness
    2. Vis medicatrix naturae – The Healing Power of Nature
Recognize, respect, and promote the self-healing power of nature inherent in each individual human being
    3. Tolle causam – Identify and Treat the Root Causes
Look beyond the symptoms to the underlying cause of the condition
    4. Docere – Doctor as Teacher
Educate patients in the steps to achieving and maintaining health, encouraging self-responsibility for wellness
    5. Treat the Whole Person – View the body as an integrated whole in all its dimensions and influences – mind, body, and spirit
    6. Prevention – Focus on emphasizing and promoting the overall health, wellness, and disease prevention for the individual, the community, and the global community

  • Naturopathic medicine is a licensed profession in North America, having regulated professional bodies in 6 provinces and 17 states (and growing!).

Naturopathic medical students go through their undergraduate studies and fulfilling prerequisite courses in basic sciences before entering their postgraduate naturopathic medical program at an AANMC-accredited college. Here, our NDs-to-be are trained in basic and clinic sciences, diagnosis, disease prevention, wellness optimization, as well as the theory and application of naturopathic modalities. Here’s an article on how the N.D. program stacks up against other healthcare professional programs: What Everyone Ought to Know about Doctors.

Students are conferred an N.D. (Naturopathic Doctor) degree upon graduation. Naturopathic medical graduates must pass the naturopathic physicians licensing examinations (NPLEX) as well as regional licensing requirements to be full-fledged, licensed and practicing naturopathic doctors.
